Ever since The America's Cup was instituted some hundred years ago (then 1968),named after the schooner America which beat all comers in a race round the Isle of Wight, challenge after challenge has been mounted to wrest the famous trophy from the Americans - but no one has yet succeeded (again, then 1968!) Much has already been written about this race, which combines the ultimate in sophisticated yacht design with the excitement of fast racing. In this book, however,Captain Illingworth brings to bear a lifetime's experience as a world-renowned yacht architect and designer, and also as a racing helmsman,to give the reader a clear and authoritative history of the race, illustrating numerous fascinating technical points and introducing many famous personalities in the yachting world with whom he has been personally acquainted. The book is illustrated with many plates, including good action pictures. John Illingworth has established his reputation as one of Britain's top ocean-racing helmsmen and yacht designers, and is the author of the classic of sailing literature,'Offshore'.As a racing skipper he won his first championship in 1929,and his numerous successes have included the Fastnet in 1947,1949,1955 and 1957,the Sydney-Hobart in 1945,and seven first places in his J.O.G. boat,Wista. He has taken part in the Bermuda race in three British challengers including his famous Myth of Malham in 1948. He has been involved in the design of many racing yachts including Maica,Belmore II, Blue Charm, Outlaw and Oryx. His present Class II yacht,Monk of Malham, won the French R.O.R.C. championship in 1966,and he is now racing his ninth Malham, the Merle. Much of the credit for the speed with which Sir Francis Chichester's Gipsy Moth IV completed its circumnavigation can be attributed to John Illingworth. Since WWII Captain Illingworth has been Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club and Commodore of the Royal Naval Sailing Association;also founder and for seven years Chairman of the Sail Training Association of Great Britain.
